Scotland Stock Licence

Use our footage to tell your story.

When you purchase footage from Scotland Stock, you are buying the right to use that footage creatively and commercially within the production or campaign for which it is licensed. You are not purchasing the footage’s copyright or ownership.

Your licence is worldwide and perpetual, allowing you to use the footage throughout the production or campaign for which it was licensed.

Scotland Stock footage may be edited, graded, cropped, reframed, composited, altered and incorporated into finished creative work, subject to the terms below.

1. Standard Licence

The Standard Licence is intended for everyday creative, commercial, web and independent use.

It covers uses including:

  • Websites and online video
  • Social media and digital content
  • YouTube and other online platforms
  • Corporate and internal communications
  • SME marketing and advertising
  • Independent films and productions
  • Smaller commercial productions
  • Personal and portfolio projects
  • Other similar creative uses

Each Standard Licence covers the use of the footage in one production or campaign.

This includes reasonable promotional, marketing and distribution materials directly associated with that production or campaign.

2. Production Licence

The Production Licence is intended for larger-scale or more commercially significant productions.

It covers uses including:

  • Broadcast television
  • Major streaming and OTT productions
  • Feature films
  • Theatrical and cinema releases
  • Major advertising campaigns
  • Large-scale commercial productions
  • National or international campaigns
  • High-budget productions
  • Commercial products and merchandise where the footage forms part of the finished product

The Production Licence provides the same creative freedom as the Standard Licence, but is intended for the larger end of the production world.

Each Production Licence covers the use of the footage in one production or campaign, including reasonable promotional, marketing and distribution materials directly associated with that production or campaign.

Which licence do I need?

Scotland Stock reserves the right to determine whether a proposed use requires a Production Licence based on the scale, distribution, audience, commercial value or nature of the production.

3. What you can do

Subject to the licence you’ve purchased, you may:

  • Incorporate the footage into films, programmes, advertisements, corporate productions, websites, social content and other creative works.
  • Edit, cut, grade, colour-correct, crop, reframe, stabilise or otherwise modify the footage.
  • Use visual effects, compositing and other creative techniques.
  • Use AI-assisted creative tools such as noise reduction, upscaling, masking and similar processes.
  • Include the footage in work produced for a client.
  • Deliver the resulting finished production to that client.
  • Use the footage as many times as reasonably required within the production or campaign for which it was licensed.
  • Distribute and exhibit the finished production worldwide for the lifetime of the production.

Your licence is non-exclusive. Scotland Stock may license the same footage to other customers.

4. What you cannot do

You may not:

  • Sell, resell, rent, lease, sublicense or otherwise redistribute the footage as a standalone asset.
  • Give the original footage to another person or organisation for their own independent use.
  • Make the footage available for download, extraction or reuse by third parties.
  • Use the footage to create or operate a competing stock footage library or similar service.
  • Claim that you filmed, created or own the original footage.
  • Transfer the licence to another person or organisation.
  • Use the footage for AI model training, machine-learning datasets, biometric datasets or to build a competing AI library.
  • Use the footage in a manner that is unlawful, defamatory, pornographic, fraudulent or deliberately misleading.
  • Use the footage in a manner that falsely represents the underlying location, person, event or subject, or implies that a real event occurred when it did not.

5. Templates and derivative works

You may incorporate Scotland Stock footage into templates, presentations, websites, applications and other creative projects where the footage forms part of the finished work and cannot be extracted or reused as a standalone asset.

You may not distribute or sell a template, product or other work in a form that allows a third party to extract, access or reuse the original Scotland Stock footage as a standalone asset.

For example, incorporating footage into a finished video template that is rendered as a completed video is permitted. Selling or distributing a template containing the original footage in a form that allows the purchaser to extract or reuse that footage is not.

6. Alteration and creative use

Scotland Stock encourages creative use of its footage.

You are free to edit, grade, crop, reframe, composite, add visual effects, alter speed and otherwise adapt footage as part of your production.

However, footage may not be altered or presented in a manner that falsely represents the underlying location, person, event or subject.

You may not use the footage in a manner that is defamatory, misleading or materially damaging to an identifiable person, organisation, property or location.

This does not prevent legitimate fictional, dramatic, documentary, artistic or visual-effects work where the nature of the production makes clear that the altered material is fictional or creatively constructed.

7. People, property and releases

Every clip on Scotland Stock is personally reviewed before publication. We consider the subject, location, people and other identifiable material shown when deciding whether and how footage is offered.

Where relevant, release information or usage notes are provided with the clip.

Some locations, buildings, interiors, artwork and other property may be subject to rights or restrictions beyond copyright. Where Scotland Stock is aware of relevant permissions or restrictions, these will be identified on the clip where appropriate.

Whether additional permission is required can depend on the particular use, production and context. The customer is responsible for determining whether any additional permissions, clearances or consents are required for their intended use.

Scotland Stock aims to offer footage responsibly and with appropriate consideration of these issues, but does not guarantee that every possible use of every clip will be free from the need for additional permission.

8. Natural sound

Where natural location sound is included with a clip, that sound forms part of the licensed footage.

Scotland Stock does not separately license third-party music, recordings, dialogue or other protected material that may have been incidentally captured in audio.

9. AI and emerging technologies

Scotland Stock footage may be used with AI-assisted creative tools as part of an otherwise permitted production.

This includes tools used for:

  • Noise reduction
  • Object removal
  • Masking
  • Colour and image processing
  • Generative fill
  • Visual effects
  • Compositing

The footage may not be used:

  • To train or develop AI or machine-learning models.
  • As part of a training or dataset library.
  • For biometric identification or biometric datasets.
  • To create or develop a competing AI-generated stock footage service.

10. Ownership and copyright

The purchase of a licence does not transfer ownership or copyright in the footage.

Scotland Stock, or the relevant rights holder, retains all copyright and other intellectual property rights in the original footage.

The licence grants the customer permission to use the footage only as described in these terms.

The licence is granted to the individual or organisation named in the purchase. It is not transferable and may not be sold, assigned or sublicensed.

The licence holder may use the footage as part of work produced for clients and may deliver the resulting finished production to those clients. The client does not thereby receive a separate licence to use the original Scotland Stock footage independently.

11. Single production or campaign

Each licence covers the use of the footage in one production or campaign.

This includes reasonable promotional, marketing and distribution materials directly associated with that production.

A separate licence is required for use in an unrelated production or campaign.

The footage may be used throughout the licensed production for its lifetime, without additional usage fees or expiry.

Buy once → use throughout the production you licensed it for → worldwide and in perpetuity.

12. Scotland Stock’s rights and responsibilities

Scotland Stock is a curated library of footage personally reviewed before publication.

Scotland Stock warrants that it owns or otherwise controls the rights necessary to grant the licence described here.

Scotland Stock has not knowingly included third-party material that it does not have the right to license.

Footage is reviewed before publication and, where relevant, release information or usage notes are provided with the clip.

However, Scotland Stock does not warrant that every use of every clip will be free from the need for additional permissions, clearances or consents.

The customer remains responsible for ensuring that their particular use complies with applicable law and any additional rights that may apply to the subject, location, person, property, trademark or other material depicted.

If a legitimate rights issue arises concerning footage licensed by Scotland Stock, please email hello@scotlandstock.com. We will investigate the matter and, where appropriate, work with the customer towards a reasonable resolution.

13. Licence acceptance

By purchasing or downloading footage from Scotland Stock, you confirm that you have read and agree to the licence applicable to your purchase, together with the Terms & Conditions.
